Follow The Money -- Who Is Paying For All This?

Tea party headquarters in West Chester opens tonight

The Cincinnati Tea Party will open the Southwest Ohio Liberty Headquarters in West Chester tonight, Sept. 14, at 6 p.m. American Majority Action is funding the tea party headquarters.

American Majority Action is also funding another headquarters near Cleveland, Ohio. The organization is launching six headquarters in the United States with two of them being in Ohio.

“Headquarters in Ohio will attempt to contact 200,000 voters before the election. This isn’t possible without some kind of base for operations,” Cincinnati Tea Party President Chris Littleton (photo) said.

Littleton, who is also the president and co-founder of the Ohio Liberty Council, also said that West Chester was chosen because of its distance from Dayton and Cincinnati.

“We may have people come from south from Dayton metro and north from Cincinnati metro – just makes sense for distance,” Littleton said.

The Southwest Ohio Liberty Headquarters is located at 8902 Beckett Road in West Chester.

American Majority Action opens headquarters today

JOPLIN, Mo. — Joplin is one of the first six cities in the nation where American Majority Action will open headquarters today. The goal is to turn out voters on election day.

What is being called the Southwest Missouri Liberty Headquarters is being opened in conjunction with tea party activists and the Southwest Missouri Conservative Network, according to Raz Shafer, of Fort Worth, Texas, who is the Missouri field director for American Majority Action.

He called the Southwest Missouri Conservative Network “a couple of hundred folks here in Southwest Missouri who are helping fight for conservative principals.”

“The reason we are working together is they are headed in the same direction we are,” Shafer said.

American Majority Action is a nonprofit organization that, according to Shafer, works to advance “individual liberty, personal responsibility, limited government and free markets.”

The new office will open at 7 p.m. today at 1802 W. 32nd St., in conjunction with the opening of an office in St. Louis, two offices in Ohio and two in Pennsylvania. Volunteers are asked to be there at 6:30 p.m.

The Joplin office will coordinate local grass-roots efforts, such as running a phone bank, block walking and campaigning for conservative political candidates and causes.

Joplin was selected as a headquarters site because of Southwest Missouri’s heavy conservative turnout in previous elections, said Shafer.

“We’re trying to help these people lend some power to their voice,” he said.

While American Majority Action professes to endorse conservative values, it does not endorse a party, Shafer said, adding it is closely aligned with the tea party.

“We want to make a statement that the tea party is here to stay,” Shafer said. “We are moving beyond protest in action. This is real and these organizations, they mean something.

“It’s essential that we move past protests and holding signs with good slogans,” he said.

Umbrella group intends to unify area Tea Party activists

Democrats and Republicans alike say a coalition of Tea Party and grassroots activists gathering under the American Majority Action banner in Pennsylvania this fall bodes well for their candidates.

American Majority Action, a Virginia-based nonprofit that helped organize conservative grassroots groups across the country, will open offices in six cities in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Missouri today. The Pennsylvania Liberty Headquarters, which hopes to harness the energy of 55 groups, will be located in Wexford and Doylestown, just outside of Philadelphia.

Pennsylvania Republican Party leaders say the effort benefits their candidates, but Democrats say it could emphasize deep divisions within the GOP.

Martin Gillespie, field director for American Majority Action's Pennsylvania effort, said the organization has a paid staff of four here and commitments from volunteers to work on targeted get-out-the-vote efforts with emphasis on the Senate race and several House elections.

Gillespie, a former staffer for the Republican National Committee, said the coalition will emphasize limited government and repeal of the health care reform act. An office along Perry Highway will be staffed through the November election, he said.

"We are excited to have the chance to partner with Tea Parties and 912 organizations across the United States. They are the ones leading the charge. They are the ones impacting their cities and states. We view our role as facilitating and meeting a need," said Drew Ryun, president of American Majority Action.

Allegheny County Republican Committee Chairman Jim Roddey said it bodes well for Republicans.

"I think most of those people are not going to vote for a lot of the incumbents, and they are not going to vote for candidates who are very liberal," he said. "By and large, they are conservative people and they will choose conservative candidates."

But Ryun said the Tea Party movement "did not spring up to help the Republican Party. ... It is a melting pot of political heritages, many of whom would not describe themselves as Republicans," he said in a call to action posted Monday on RedState.com.

Pennsylvania Democratic State Committee Chairman Jim Burn welcomes the coalition.

"The Tea Party movement and this organization that is coming in to make a vain attempt at coordinating Tea Party activists will allow Democrats to remind the voters that the Republican Party has lost its ability to lead, that a Tea Party is attempting to take over the party of Ronald Reagan, Dwight Eisenhower and Abraham Lincoln and rid them of moderates who will work with the other side," Burn said.
