Denny Whayne Leaves City Council

Denny Whayne wasn't my representative on the Springfield City Council, Ralph Manley represents the district in which I live.

That doesn't mean that we can't salute Denny for his service on Council. The SN-L today has a lengthy story on Whayne's time on Council.

Councilman Manley said, "He represented the Black community on council and he did it well."

Does Manley think Whayne represented the black community because he was black? Does Manley think he represents the white community because he is white? Or he represents the real estate community because he is a real estate agent?

Ralph should have taken a cue from Samuel Knox, who said Whayne "...has represented the entire community very well."

Councilwoman Rushefsky said, "This is a man who had very significant health issues and yet he was always there. He did what a lot of council people who are in a much healthier state don't do."

This statement makes me wonder exactly what is it that "a lot of council people who are in a much healthier state don't do" and who are the "council people" Cindy is referring to?

Councilman Whayne, thank you for your service to our fair city.

Remember bus riders, the third largest city in the state is governed by a volunteer mayor and volunteer city council with a hired city manager.

Group Calls For Springfield City Manager Called To Resign: Allege Ethical Breach

I received this news release from "The City" this afternoon:

"Several members of the media have requested a statement from City Manager Greg Burris to determine the validity of covering allegations raised in a news conference held by the SOS group this morning. Neither Greg, nor any members of City staff, were informed about, or attended, the news conference. Greg has issued this response based on the e-mail itself and the allegations raised in a news release following the news conference.

Like Greg, I wasn't informed about or attended the press conference so I wasn't sure what allegations the SOS raised.

But at least one, possibly two Springfield bloggers attended the press conference mentioned. Jackehammer attended and possibly LifeOfJason may have attended the press conference also.

So, Can Anyone Else Figure Out What Was Going On Here?

From an article in today's SN-L*:

A South Carolina man was indicted today by a federal grand jury in Springfield for his role in defrauding an Oregon company of nearly $4 million with fake invoices.

Simpsonville, S.C. resident Christopher Levanto worked with an unnamed and unindicted co-conspirator in Springfield, a news release from Acting United States Attorney Matt J. Whitworth said.

Levanto and the unnamed Springfield resident created fraudulent invoices that were sent to Yakima, an Oregon company that currently manufactures and distributes luggage and bicycle racks; previously, the company also manufactured and distributed water craft.

Levanto’s alleged mail fraud and money laundering occurred from Sept. 24, 2001 to May 26, 2006.

According to the news release, the Springfield resident “Mr. A” was a contract employee for Yakima. Mr. A submitted fraudulent invoices from a fictitious company — Cooper Enterprises — to Yakima, claiming freight that was never hauled was hauled. Mr. A received $3,759,370 through the scheme. He recruited Levanto in to represent himself as an employee of Cooper Enterprises and to answer questions from Yakima about the invoices. Levanto received about $1 million for his role in perpetrating the Cooper Enterprises scheme against Yakima, the news release said.

If found guilty, Levanto and his buisnesses (sic) would have to forfeit $3,992,935 to the government, as well as other funds in the business bank accounts.

It's a complicated scene but if you can understand how Milo was able to buy eggs for seven cents in Malta, sell them for five cents and still make a profit for the syndicate- of which everyone had a share, including Hungry Joe, then you will be able to follow this scheme.

You may even be able to understand the stimulis package, fix boats or run a tanning salon.

Shane: "A man has to be what he is, Joey. You can't break the mold. I tried it and it didn't work for me."

Shane, quite the letter. I liked the movie better.

From the AMC Filmsite:

At the conclusion of the film, Joey apologizes for expressing his hate when Shane knocked out his father. The young boy admires his hero, but Shane knows that Joey is admiring him for the wrong reasons.

He is certain that he must move on (without Joey) and not provide Joey with an inappropriate role model for his life.

Shane simply states: "A man has to be what he is." [Note: this line is a variation on the cliched western genre phrase: "A man's gotta be what a man's gotta be."] As Shane starts to leave, he indicates to Joey that he will never return ("there's no living with a killing" - or a killer):

Joey: Shane! I knew you could, Shane. I knew it. I knew it just as well as anything. Was that him? Was that Wilson?

Shane: That was him. That was Wilson alright. He was fast - fast on the draw. Joey, what are you doing here?

Joey: I'm sorry, Shane.

Shane: You don't have to be. You'd better run back.

Joey: Can I ride home behind you?

Shane: Afraid not, Joey.

Joey: Please, why not?

Shane: I gotta be goin' on.

Joey: Why, Shane?

Shane: A man has to be what he is, Joey. You can't break the mold. I tried it and it didn't work for me.

Joey (pleading, unwilling to give Shane up so easily): We want you, Shane.

Shane: Joey, there's no living with, with a killing. There's no going back from it. Right or wrong, it's a brand, a brand that sticks. (Shane shows sad affection in his eyes for the boy.) There's no going back. Now you run on home to your mother and tell her, tell her everything's alright, and there aren't any more guns in the valley.

Joey (noticing that Shane has been wounded): Shane, it's bloody. You're hurt.

Shane (overlooking his wound): I'm alright, Joey. You go home to your mother and your father. And grow up to be strong and straight. And Joey, take care of them, both of them.

Joey: Yes, Shane. (Tears well up in Joey's eyes)

The film ends with the classic, poignant goodbye and farewell. [Joey is the first to see Shane ride into their community, and he is the only one to bid Shane, his mythical idolized hero, farewell.] Joey runs down the boardwalk as Shane begins riding away to leave the valley.

Joey: He'd never have been able to shoot you - if you'd have seen him.

Shane (quietly): Bye, little Joe.

Joey: He never even would have cleared the holster, would he, Shane?

Badly injured in the gun battle, Shane disappears into the twilight meadow toward the distant hills framed against the sky and mountains, growing smaller and smaller in the distance. Young, anguished, and heartbroken Joey sadly calls out to his hero/idol in one of filmdom's most famous and haunting endings, as tears streak down his face. [He is left abandoned and stranded there, summarizing the needs that the members of his family - including himself - have had for Shane.]

Pa's got things for you to do, and Mother wants you. (the words "wants you" echo) I know she does. Shane. Shane! Come back! 'Bye, Shane.

The mountains echo Joey's plaintive call as Shane (slightly slumped over in his saddle, wounded and dying - or already dead?) rides up the crest of Cemetery Hill through the tombstones and ascends toward the snow-capped Tetons.

In a mirror image of the film's opening, he follows the same path that he had taken in his descent into the valley.

I was at Lighthouse books (Christian used bookstore on south Campbell) when I saw you in the CD section. You had out your laptop and you were copying their cds. I loved how rebellious you were in such a wholesome and Christian environment. It brought out a little of the devilish side in me too. I kept having all sorts of naughty thoughts. I wanted to talk to you, but my husband was with me. I pray to God that you will see this and He can bring us together.
