Ed Martin, Governor Blunt's Chief of Staff

Ed Martin, Matt Blunt's chief of staff has certainly been taking some hits lately. First was his comment about "a bunch of Mexicans." Read about that comment here.

Then, there is his emails to Tony Messenger regarding Planned Parenthood. Tony's right on this one, read about their exchange here.

Google has pages of references to
Ed Martin also.

D. Cooper, Where Are You And What Are You Doing?

The head of the U.S. federal government agency that determines benefits for disabled veterans (Daniel Cooper, President George W. Bush's undersecretary for benefits at the Department of Veterans Affairs) says Bible study is "more important than doing [my] job." Read the whole article here.

We've blogged about this before and it still leaves an unsettled spot in our gut.

Larry Craig's New Best Friend

Larry Craig’s Best Friend: The US Constitution
As word comes of Sen. Larry Craig’s reconsideration of his announced resignation from the U.S. Senate, it turns out that his best ally in getting rid of his guilty plea for his conduct in a Minneapolis airport restroom may be the United States Constitution.

If the senator had been a better student of the U.S. Constitution, his arrest may never happened at all, and if the U.S. Constitution is followed, as of course it should be, the senator’s arrest and guilty plea will have to be vacated.

This is because the Constitution, in a straightforward and unambiguous manner, states in Article 1, Section 6 that “Senators and Representatives. shall. be privileged from arrest during their attendance at the session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same.” (emphasis mine) The only exceptions are for treason, felony and breach of peace, and the senator, of course, was charged with a misdemeanor.

Since the senator was on his way to Washington, and did in fact cast a vote on the evening of the day on which he was arrested, his arrest and subsequent questioning were, technically speaking, unconstitutional.

Miyoshi Umeki RIP 1929-2007

How did we miss this one?
Miyoshi Umeki passed over on August 28, 2007. She played Mrs. Livingston on the Courtship of Eddie's Father.

From the New York Times, her obituary:

A versatile performer who also had major roles on Broadway and on television, Ms. Umeki played Katsumi in “Sayonara,” a tragic drama, based on the novel by James Michener, about American servicemen who fall in love with women they meet while stationed in occupied Japan.

Ms. Umeki turned to Broadway in December 1958 to star as a young Chinese immigrant in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Flower Drum Song.” She received a Tony nomination in 1959 for best actress and then reprised the role two years later in the film adaptation of the play. Ms. Umeki’s other films were “Cry for Happy” (1961), “The Horizontal Lieutenant” (1962) and “A Girl Named Tamiko” (1963).

On television, she is best known as Mrs. Livingston on the situation comedy “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father,” starring Bill Bixby, which ran from 1969 through 1972. She appeared as a guest in numerous other series in the 1960s, including “The Donna Reed Show,” “Dr. Kildare,” “Rawhide” and “Mister Ed.”
She had been living with her son in Licking, MO for the past four years. That is where she died. Her son said she never liked talking about her career, which she left because she wanted to be a wife and mother. Which is so Mrs. Livingston.

HEY! There's A War Going On!

Branson Hopes To Diversify With Center: Opening Causes Concerns In Springfield

Branson, Missouri has now a convention center. Springfield, Missouri does not now have a convention center.

Branson tore down most of historic downtown Branson, Missouri to build the Branson Landing. Before it got torn down, there actually was a Branson Landing, you could dock your boat and walk up street to the liquor store and buy a six pack and walk back to your boat.

The Sammy Lane resort is gone. The White River Landing is here.

Will Branson, Missouri be able to draw business away from Springfield? The A Small Group of Ministers recently held their annual convention in Branson instead of Springfield because they knew Branson, Missouri has a strong spiritual economy.

Bill Tirone, director of sales and marketing for the Branson Convention Center, says Branson and Springfield have two distinct markets: Branson caters to the leisure crowds, while Springfield is more about business.
The classic business in front / party in back debate rages on!

The shot below was taken near the fountain at Branson Landing after the conclusion of the Annual A Small Group of Ministers convention last week in Branson, Missouri. The Branson, Missouri blogspot has the whole story here. Branson, Missouri has a convention center.

Nukes Fly Across Country

This happened a couple of days ago, a B-52 flew from Minot ND to Barksdale LA with at least five nuclear warheads on board. OK, so what is the big deal? Isn't that sort of like what B-52s do? Fly weapons, besides the news stories say they couldn't have detonated. So, it is a big non story.
But wait, there's this take by Larry Johnson on Wednesday:

Staging Nukes for Iran?

Why the hubbub over a B-52 taking off from a B-52 base in Minot, North Dakota and subsequently landing at a B-52 base in Barksdale, Louisiana? That’s like getting excited if you see a postal worker in uniform walking out of a post office. And how does someone watching a B-52 land identify the cruise missiles as nukes? It just does not make sense.

So I called a old friend and retired B-52 pilot and asked him. What he told me offers one compelling case of circumstantial evidence. My buddy, let’s call him Jack D. Ripper, reminded me that the only times you put weapons on a plane is when they are on alert or if you are tasked to move the weapons to a specific site.

Then he told me something I had not heard before.

Barksdale Air Force Base is being used as a jumping off point for Middle East operations. Gee, why would we want cruise missile nukes at Barksdale Air Force Base. Can’t imagine we would need to use them in Iraq. Why would we want to preposition nuclear weapons at a base conducting Middle East operations?

His final point was to observe that someone on the inside obviously leaked the info that the planes were carrying nukes. A B-52 landing at Barksdale is a non-event. A B-52 landing with nukes. That is something else.

Now maybe there is an innocent explanation for this? I can’t think of one. What is certain is that the pilots of this plane did not just make a last minute decision to strap on some nukes and take them for a joy ride. We need some tough questions and clear answers. What the hell is going on? Did someone at Barksdale try to indirectly warn the American people that the Bush Administration is staging nukes for Iran? I don’t know, but it is a question worth asking.

Dead Certain

Dead Certainty is a bad trait, September 6, 2007
By G. Leon - See all my reviews

Being "dead certain" means you NEVER listen to anyone's else opinion,
even when you pretend to. Being "dead certain" also means you are arrogant, and incapable of thinking outside your own little world of black and white. Being "dead certain" means you have contempt for any opinion other than your own, and only keep the company of advisors that always agree with you, which gives a person a feeling of omnipotence and power. Since Bush was a child, his parents and enablers have saved him from all his mistakes, so he feels he can do no wrong.

This is the worst trait for the leader of the free world, because the world is not black and white.
