MediaCom Ice Park and Tennis Stadium, It Takes Balls To Play This Game Or tanstaafl*

This would be funny if it wasn't so transparent. With the approval of the Springfield City Council, Mediacom (We May Be The Only Cable Company In Town But We Try Not To Act Like It) will soon be paying $200,000 a year for the next ten years for the naming rights to the JOrdan Valley Icepark and the Stadium at Cooper Tennis Park. The SN-L has the story here.

City Manager Bob Cumley said the extra money from Mediacom means the city won’t have to pay as much on the ice park debt.

The Springfield-Greene County Park Board, which operates both facilities, supports the name changes.

Two Hundred Thousand Dollars a year for ten years, let's see that 200,000.00 times 10 equals Two Million Dollars! Dang, that is damn altruistic of Mediacom to do that out of the goodness of their hearts.

I wonder what else Mediacom will get for the two hundred grand a year they are paying for the naming rights? Oh Yeah, how many cable companies are in town?

I wonder where Mediacom will get the two hundred grand a year to pay for the naming rights?

Oh yeah. Checked your cable bill lately?I pay $57.95 a month for cable tv. I will bet anyone a month's worth of cable we see a rate increase sooner than later.

What did my Grandpa always say, "There ain't no such thing as a free lunch." Sometimes I feel like they think we just fell off the turnip truck!ps--I wonder if "The City" cleared this with John Q. first?

Bus Note: The SN-L has another story in this morning's paper, complete with comments. The link is here.

I sent them all an email saying I thought this was a bad idea:

I do not believe this is in the best interests of the citizens of Springfield.
If Mediacom truly wants to do something for the citizens of Springfield, let them lower their rates.
That the sign is already made, as reported in this morning's SN-L, continues the perception that City Council and the Park Board are not good stewards.
Please vote against this proposal.

10. COUNCIL BILL 2008-142.(Carlson) A special ordinance approving the entry of a naming rights agreement between the Springfield-Greene County Park Board (“Park Board” hereafter) and Mediacom Communications Corporation (“Mediacom” hereafter), for the naming rights related to the “Jordan Valley Ice Park” and the “Cooper Tennis Complex Stadium”, renaming these facilities as the “Mediacom Ice Park” and the “Mediacom Tennis Stadium”. (The Park Board recommends approval.)

11. COUNCIL BILL 2008-143. (Carlson) A special ordinance amending the 2007-2008 budget for the Springfield-Greene County Park Board, of the City of Springfield, Missouri (“Park Board” hereafter), by adding $200,000 to the Budget for funds received from Mediacom Communications Corporation (“Mediacom” hereafter) for the naming rights related to the “Mediacom Ice Park” and the “Mediacom Tennis Stadium”.
I am pleased to notice that someone in "The City" is using
articles: "(The Park Board recommends approval.)"

Bus note: I just received an email from the city with the revised notes on this subject:
12. COUNCIL BILL 2008-142. My friend, Vivian Ward, said this whole affair reminds her of the punch line to that bad joke: "We already know what you are, now we are just haggling over the price."

From the news article:

"The city no longer negotiates a franchise deal with Mediacom, thanks to a law passed by Missouri lawmakers last year that created statewide franchises."

So why shouldn't the city take some money back from the Mediacom coffers?

Beating my head against the wall.....If Mediacom has enough money to "GIVE" $2,000,000 and expects nothing in return except for naming rights, doesn't it sort of make you wonder where the two mil comes from? Like maybe it comes from their customers in form of high cable tv rates?

google uverse, a choice is coming. it's already in KC and St.Louis and is why we have statewide franchises now
