August 1, 1944 - Anne Frank penned her last entry into her diary. "[I] keep on trying to find a way of becoming what I would like to be, and what I could be, if...there weren't any other people living in the world." Three days later, Anne and her family were arrested and sent to Nazi concentration camps. Anne died at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945 at age 15
August 1, 1966 - Charles Whitman climbs to the observation deck of the University of Texas Clock Tower in Austin, Texas. At 11:48 am he commenced firing, eventually killing 14 people and wounding 31 more.
August 1, 1977 - Francis Gary Powers died in a helicopter crash in Los Angeles while working as a helicopter reporter for television station KNBC. The crash of his helicopter was apparently caused by a malfunctioning fuel gauge which had been repaired without his knowledge.
When asked how high he was flying on May 1, 1960, he would often reply, "not high enough."
