Christianity and Social Progress by Pope John XXIII

Encyclical (Latin title Mater et Magistra ) written by Pope John XXIII on May 15, 1961.

Main points: Enumerates the economic, scientific, social, and political developments that have taken place since Rerum novarum and Quadragesimo anno. Says there's not just a disparity between rich and poor classes anymore—there's a disparity between rich and poor nations. Decries arms race and the plight of the world's farmers. Arms spending contributes to poverty; peace would be possible if economic imbalances among nations were righted.

It's the duty of wealthy, industrialized nations to help poor, nonindustrialized nations; but in giving aid, it is every country's duty to respect the latter's culture and to refrain from domination. Since technological advances have made nations interdependent as never before, cooperation and mutual assistance are necessary. Says all Catholics should be reared on Catholic social teaching

Context: Advancements such as nuclear energy, automation, space exploration, and improved communication technologies pose complex, new problems for industrialized nations. Meanwhile, millions live in poverty in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Innovation: "Internationalizes" social teaching by addressing, for the first time, the plight of nonindustrialized nations.

Pope,
Catholicism is a broad term for the body of the Catholic faith, its theologies and doctrines, its liturgical, ethical, spiritual, and behavioral characteristics. The Catholic Church transformed Mexico into a nation that has progressed today into an exporter or people. Is more foreign aid the answer?

Islamism is not only a religion but also a political system emphasizing the enforcement of Sharia (Islamic law); of pan-Islamic political unity; and of the elimination of non-Muslim, particularly Western military, economic, political, social, or cultural influences in the Muslim world, which they believe to be incompatible with Islam. These folks want to kill me, my family and my friends. Poverty is rampant in Islamic nations.

I need some help in understanding specifically how you believe these problems need to be dealt with.

Thank you and have a Merry Christmas celebrating the birth of Christ.

I believe this post is in reference to that great Catholic Newt Gingrich and his assault on the Church's idea of social justice. If your view of Mexico and its relationship to the Vatican was valid, then wouldn't we also be overrun with Brazilians, Spaniards, the French and Italians?

And the vast majority of Muslims do not want to kill you, your family and your friends. You may also want to check out the economic state of countries like Saudi Arabia and Bahrain before making such blanket statements.

@2:24,The Islamic nations of
Kazakhstan, Iran, Afghanistan, Iran,Syria,Iraq,Egypt,Lybia,Algeria,Mali,Niger,Chad,Nigeria,Sudan,Uzbekistan,Ethopia, Somalia, and Turkey all have extreme area of poverty and all trump your Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, and, feeble understanding of world events.

My understanding of the Church the Pope's view of Mexico is that the United States should send more foreign aid to Mexico.

"...wouldn't we also be overrun with Brazilians, Spaniards, the French and Italians?"

WTF are you talking about? You are like one of those 99%ers giving the rest of us a bad name. Go 'occupy' Wall Street or, maybe even better, Commercial Street.

Your last paragraph reflects your state of mind.

I'm disappointed in you.

But, remember, God loves you.

Location, location, location. I agree with the poster pointing out the terrible social and economic conditions of most of the world's Islamic popoulations.

Given the econimic mess in Europe, if those nations bordered the United States, we'd probably have immigaration problems. I'd welcome more Brazilians.
